Using your skills: opportunities for research careers inside and outside of academia
University of Essex,
View in Goolge Maps (CO4 3SQ)
In this half day course, Carol McNaughten Nicholls will firstly provide an overview of research careers and opportunities outside of academia – in commercial agencies, charities and government, answering questions such as: What is involved? What is it like? What are the skills that researchers need? What kind of outputs do they produce and for which audiences?
In the second part, Carol will draw on her extensive experience in commercial and not-for-profit sectors, presenting illustrative case studies that exemplify how research is commissioned, delivered and disseminated, highlighting similarities and differences with university-based research. Participants will be encouraged to think about and discuss how their own research skills could be applied in these contexts.
In the final part of the course, participants will learn about the pathways into agency and other non-academic research: the skills and experience to highlight on CVs, different routes to find employment (e.g. recruitment consultants/applications directly to agencies), the interview and recruitment process and salary expectations. Participants will be encouraged to think about their own particular skills and how to turn these into the right ‘currency’ for agency research and a ‘next steps’ plan if they are interested in taking this further.
